Learn Mandarin Chinese, how to say – Sit-up, push-up, squat and lunge are four common boring workouts. What is dun ma bu? Ed Sheeran – The A Team Lyrics

Today, let’s talk about how to say some common physical exercises in Chinese. I thought of writing this post while I was in gym working on an Elliptical machine. I had 3 hours of sweating time that afternoon, too much for my own good, but the time was well spent.

Last week I was doing lunge, and I hurt one of my knees. A long while ago I did abdominal crunch with too much weight and I hurt my spine. I am still hurting here and there, but it is OK. No pains, no gains? Yes, gain a lot of salty water from eyebrows and nose tip, and maybe some ugly muscles too. I should write more about exercise later on, maybe about how to cope with exercise induced pains.

Here is some information about the term 马步 Mǎ bù. Literally it means horse step. If you would like to learn some advanced Chinese, you are welcome to study it. Audio recording, pinyin and translation are as followed.

Squatting is the most basic training for practicing martial arts. When one does squatting, the distance between two feet needs to be slightly wider than shoulder and use half squatting posture. For this posture is like horseback riding, hence it got the name. If squatting well, the trainee’s kidney and waist can be strengthened, spirit will be harmonized, and balance ability will be good. Thus, he or she will not easily be struck down, but also will enhance the body’s ability to respond. Squatting is one of the basic skills before practicing martial arts.

Do you like doing squat? I rarely do it. It is not my sport at all, but I do hope you did learn some Chinese phrases, grammar, and sentence structure from the above passage. Also, in China, there is one kind of toilet called squat toilets ( 蹲式马桶,dún shì mǎtǒng ). So, if you plan to go to China soon, maybe you need to practice squat often, just in case that You won’t fall on floor or toilet later on during your China trip. If you have interest in learning various kinds of Chinese toilets, then there is a link:
The Art of Mastering the Chinese Toilet

Here is a beautiful sad song I listen to lately, hope you will like it too.

Seeing flowers through fog

Look at flowers in fog

yǒu rén xīn téng shuō wǒ wěi qū le diǎn
Someone was pained in heart and said I got wronged a bit

yě yǒu rén xiào wǒ yī dìng shì xiā le yǎn
Also some people laughed and said I got eyes blinded

dàn ài bù ài nǐ shì wǒ zì jǐ de rén shēng
However, love you or not love you is my own life

wǒ guǎn bié rén néng bù néng liǎo jiě
I don’t care other people would understand or not

nǐ yǒu nǎ xiē bù hǎo zǎo jiù chá jué
You have some badness I long ago noticed them

dàn na yòu zěn yàng nán dào wǒ jiù wán měi
But so what? Don’t tell me that I am perfect

wǒ yào de shì nǐ ràng wǒ zhao mí de nà xiē
What I want are those things in you that made me feel fascinated

qí tā wǒ dōu néng shì ér bù jiàn
For other things, I all can see and pretend they are not there (turn a blind eye)

How can you become intoxicated with open-eye kisses?

Love is like seeing flowers in fog, hazy is what beautiful is

Enough to let me heartily complain

However had you by my side

Quotes of hazy

“A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy?”
Albert Einstein quotes

The first moments of sleep are an image of death; a hazy torpor grips our thoughts and it becomes impossible for us to determine the exact instant when the “I,” under another form, continues the task of existence.
Gerard De Nerval

“That thing, that moment, when you kiss someone and everything around becomes hazy and the only thing in focus is you and this person and you realize that that person is the only person that you’re supposed to kiss for the rest of your life, and for one moment you get this amazing gift and you want to laugh and you want to cry because you feel so lucky that you found it and so scared that that it will go away all at the same time.”
Drew Barrymore quotes

Can’t connect, I haven’t slept, am I crazy? Fall so deep and I can’t sleep, I’m slipping into hazy.
