As for the origin of this green holiday ( 假 日 [Jiàrì], it is all because of St. Patrick. When Patrick was about 16, he was captured ( 俘 虏 [fúlŭ] ) in Wales (威 尔 士 [Wēi’ĕrshì] ) by Irish （爱 尔 兰 的 [ài’ĕrlán de] ） raiders and taken as a slave to work in Ireland （爱 尔 兰 [ài’ĕrlán]）, where he lived for six years before escaping and returning to his family. Later, Patrick entered the Roman Catholic （ 天 主 教 的 [Tiānzhŭjiào de] ） Church, and then he returned to Ireland as an ordained bishop in the north and west of Ireland. By the seventh century （世 纪 [shìjì] ）, he had come to be revered as the patron saint of Ireland. Irish people respect and honor him for he brought Christianity to the Ireland. St. Patrick died on March 17 in the year of 461 AD. To remember him, St. Patrick’s Day became a national holiday in Ireland, and a provincial holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The origin color of St. Patrick day is blue; until the 19th century, green started to be associated with St. Patrick’s Day. In Irish legends, green was worn by fairies, and also by farmers, for farmers really love their crops to grow lavishly green. According to Irish legend (传 奇 [chuánqí] ), St. Patrick taught the Irish about the doctrine of the Holy Trinity by showing people the shamrock, a three-leafed plant, using it to illustrate the Trinity in the Christian religion. You might wonder what is the difference between clover and shamrock? Some people say shamrock is a common name for a clover ( 三 叶 草 [Sān yè cǎo]). However, according to the Irish word “seamrog,” from which shamrock comes, means “little clover.” The hop clover is the original shamrock picked by Saint Patrick. It is estimated that there are about 10,000 regular three-leaf clovers for every lucky four-leaf clover; that is to say, four leaves clovers are very very rare. According to Irish tradition, four leaves clovers bring good luck to their finders, especially if found accidentally; each leaf of them represents something: the first is for faith ( 信 仰 [xìnyăng] ), the second is for hope (希 望 [xīwàng] ), the third is for love, and the fourth is for luck.
Do you like to dress up as a leprechaun ( 矮 妖 精 [ǎi Yāojing]) on St. Patrick’s day? If you do, you have to dress yourself like a shoemaker, with pointed shoes and hat.
