我觉得住在这间公寓是非常安全,省钱而且方便。
Wǒ juéde zhù zài zhè jiān gōngyù shì fēicháng ānquán , shěngqián érqiě fāngbiàn .
Wǒ (我 pronoun, I) juéde ( 觉得verb, feel) zhù (住 verb, live) zài (在preposition, at or in) zhè (这 pronoun, this) jiān (间 measure word for house and apartment or room) gōngyù ( 公寓 noun, apartment) shì (是 verb, is) fēicháng (非常 adverb, very or really) ānquán (安全 adjective, safe) , shěngqián (省钱 adjective, money saving) érqiě (而且 conjunction, as well as) fāngbiàn (方便 verb, convenient).

Chinese grammar:

What is the differences between 觉得 juéde,认为 rènwéi ,以为 yǐwéi,想 xiǎng, 要 yào and 想要 xiǎng yào ?

[ca_audio url=”http://www.chinesetolearn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/i-would-like-to-2.mp3″ width=”500″ height=”27″ css_class=”codeart-google-mp3-player”]

(1) 觉得 juéde means to feel or to think.

It can be the five senses you feel – hearing, sight, touch, smell and taste. Five senses, in Chinese we say them 五种感觉器官 wǔ zhǒng gǎn jué qì guān (five kinds of sensing organs),or 五官 wǔ guān (five organs) for short.

Touch: 触觉 chù jué
When you feel your head is pretty hot and you think you might have a fever, then you can say:
我觉得我的头很热,我可能发烧了。
Wǒ juéde Wǒ de tóu hěn rè , Wǒ kěnéng fāshāo le .
I feel my head is pretty hot; I think it is likely I got a fever.

Hearing:听觉 tīng jué
When you heard something loud and made you not comfortable in a party, then you can say:
我觉得这个舞会声音很大,很吵。
Wǒ juéde zhè ge wǔhuì shēngyīn hěn dà , hěn chǎo .
I feel this dance party’s noise is pretty loud, very noisy.

Sight:视觉 shì jué
When you see the sunlight is too bright and hurt your eyes, you say:
我觉得太阳光太亮,让我的眼腈不舒服。
Wǒ juéde tài yáng guāng tài liàng , ràng wǒ de yǎn jīng bù shū fu .
I feel the sunshine is too bright, and it makes my eyes not comfortable.

Smell:嗅觉 xiù jué
When you smelled flowers, you feel the wonderful fragrance, you say:
这些花闻起来,我觉得很香。
zhè xiē huā wén qǐlai , Wǒ juéde hěn xiāng .
When I smell these flowers, I feel they are very fragrant.

Taste: 味觉 wèi jué
When you tasted some fresh cherries, you thought they were the best fruit ever, then you say:
这些樱桃尝起来,我觉得真是非常好吃。
zhè xiē yīngtáo cháng qǐlai , Wǒ juéde zhēnshì fēicháng hǎo chī .
These cherries when I ate them, I felt they were really delicious.

Heart: 心 xīn, heart is also one kind of organ, and a very complicated one too.

Beside these five senses, what you feel in your heart you can also use 觉得. For example, you feel the teacher is not fair to you, and treat you not nicely, then you can say:
老师对我不好,对待我不公平。
lǎoshī duì Wǒ bù lún zhī liàn , duìdài Wǒ bù gōngping .
The teacher is not nice to me, he or she treated me unfairly.

If you were in a pitch dark place, you feel scared, then you say:
这个地方黑森森的,真是可怕。
zhè ge dì fang hēi sēn sēn de , zhēn shì kě pà .
This place is pitch dark, really scary.

(2)认为 rènwéi is similar to 觉得, but it is more formal, and more strong. It can be to feel, to think or to believe. It is more like you analyzed the situation a bit, and had your own conclusion.

For example, if your friend got sick for many days, she had fever, coughing, and all body aches, then you would be pretty sure that she or he was having flu.

他发烧,咳嗽,全身酸痛,我认为他一定是得了流行性感冒了。
tā fāshāo , késou , quán shēn suān tòng , Wǒ rènwéi tā yīdìng shì dé le liúxíngxìnggǎnmào le .
He is having a fever, coughing, all body aches; I think he definitely has gotten flu.

If you are a teacher, and you saw your students’ workbooks have identical mistakes on many questions, then you can say:

我认为这两个学生作业互相抄袭。
Wǒ rènwéi zhè liǎng ge xuésheng zuò yè hùxiāng chāoxí .
I think these two students copied each other’s homework.

(3)以为 In classic Chinese, 以为 has more meanings — to believe / to think / to consider / to be under the impression. However, in modern Chinese, most commonly, we used it as – mistakenly think or wrongly presume. For example, you thought he didn’t have a dog, but he actually does.
我以为他没有狗,可是他有。
Wǒ yǐwéi tā méiyǒu gǒu , kěshì tā yǒu .
I thought he did not have a dog, but he has.

You thought a lady is pretty young, but then she told you she is sixty.
我以为她很年轻,可是她已经六十岁了。
Wǒ yǐwéi tā hěn niánqīng , kěshì tā yǐjīng liùshí suì le .
I thought she was very young, but she was already 60 years old.

(4)想 xiǎng has a few meanings - to think, to want, would like to. It is like the desire of wanting to do something, but not necessarily what you desire or want will happen:

You think of someone; let’s say your mother, then you say:
我想我妈妈。
Wǒ xiǎng Wǒ māma .
I miss my mom.

You feel like you want to go out and play, then you say:
我想出去玩。
Wǒ xiǎng chūqù wán.
I would like to go out and play.

You are thirsty and you want to drink a cup of water:
我想喝一杯水。
Wǒ xiǎng hē yī bēi shuǐ .
I would like to drink one cup of water.

Some desire will be unlikely to happen, such as:

我想上太空去旅行。
Wǒ xiǎng shàng tàikōng qù lǚxíng .
I would like to go to outer space for a trip.

我想回到我小时候。
Wǒ xiǎng huídào Wǒ xiǎo shíhou .
I would like to return to my childhood.

(5)要 yào has a few meanings — to want or is going to.

You are short of paper and pencils, and you have to buy some, then you say:

我要去买纸和笔。
Wǒ yào qù mǎi zhǐ hé bǐ .
I want to go to buy paper and pens.

After the class, your classmate asked you where are you going? Then you can say:
A 下课了,你要做什么?
xiàkè le , nǐ yào zuò shénme ?
Class is over; what you want to do?

B 我要去图书馆。
Wǒ yào qù túshūguǎn
I want to go to library.

(6)想要 xiǎng yào means think of wanting something or would like to.

For it is a rainy day, and you don’t like to stay indoor, then you can say:
下雨天不好玩, 我想要出去散步, 可是雨太大。
xiàyǔ tiān bù lún zhī liàn wán , Wǒ xiǎng yào chūqù sànbù , kěshì yǔ tàidà .
Rainy day is not fun; I want to go out to take a walk, but the rains are too big.

When someone offer you a drink, and ask what you would like to drink:

我想要一罐雪碧。
Wǒ xiǎng yào yī guàn xuěbì .
I would like to have a can of sprite.

I Google 想要 for a Chinese song, and this one seems good. Have fun.

蔡旻佑-我想要說 cài ín yòu -Wǒ xiǎng yào shuō – I would like to say

陶晶瑩-想要 Táo Jīngyíng -xiǎng yào I would like to

[ca_audio url=”http://www.chinesetolearn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/birthday-2.mp3″ width=”500″ height=”27″ css_class=”codeart-google-mp3-player”]

生日快乐,在这特别的一天,我祝你拥有一个就像你一样美好的新的一年。
shēngrì kuàilè , zài zhè tèbié de yī tiān, Wǒ zhù nǐ yōngyǒu yī ge jiù xiàng nǐ yī yàng měihǎo de xīn de yī nián .
shēngrì (生日 noun, birthday) kuàilè (快乐 adjective, happy) , zài (在preposition word, on or at) zhè (这 pronoun, this) tèbié (特别 adjective, special) de (的 particle to connect the attributive and the noun it modifies) yī (一 number, one) tiān ( 天noun, day), Wǒ (我 pronoun, I) zhù (祝 verb, wish) nǐ (你 pronoun, you) yōngyǒu (拥有 verb, have) yī (一number, one) ge (个 measure word) jiù (就 adverb, just) xiàng (像 verb, like) nǐ (你 pronoun, you) yī yàng (一样 adverb, the same) měihǎo (美好adjective, beautiful or wonderful) de (的 connecting particle) xīn (新adjective, new) de (的 connecting particle) yī (一 number, one) nián (年noun, year).

Everyone has only one chance in a one’s life time to be sent to this beautiful Earth, and this special day is everyone’s unique day — birthday! If today is your birthday, it means you made an achievement and have lived another year. If you think your past year is the worst year in your life, then you are lucky, for the worst year has gone and you will be living a new year and new life. If you think you got a good year that is good too, for you got some good memory in you for a life time. So, no matter it was a year’s joy or a year’s crap, always be thankful for the learning and living experience and aim for a better future to achieve your goal in life and be prosperous everyday, have fun and be well.

Speaking of birthday, it is hard not to think of birthday presents. No matter what presents as long as they come from a good wish and a caring heart, then they will do just fine. It can be a poem that made by heart, a photo frame that made by hands, a flower that you pick up along the river side near your home, or a crystal white pebble that you spot on the ground you walk by.

There is a song I like a lot and a lot, I would like to translate it as a birthday present and wish you the best luck and spirit in the world in good time and in not so good time too. Life is not all rosy everyday, but life still has to go on even when it is downright unpleasant. Attitude matters; be productive and be strong.

Chinese translation and recording. I wish I could sing it, but I am having a cold so it is really hard for me to sing this song now.

A Mandarin Chinese birthday blessing

[ca_audio url=”http://www.chinesetolearn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/birthday-3.mp3″ width=”500″ height=”27″ css_class=”codeart-google-mp3-player”]

播下一粒种子可以让鲜花盛开,栽上一棵幼苗可以让绿意萌萌,扯下一片彩云可以让梦想腾飞。烦恼是一时的,幸福才是长久的;伤心是一刻的,快乐才是一直的. 今天是你的生日,祝你生日快乐!

bō xià yī lì zhǒngzi kěyǐ ràng xiānhuā shèngkāi , zāi shàng yī kē yòu Miáo Kěyǐ ràng lǜ yì méng méng , chěxià yī piàn cǎi yún kěyǐ ràng mèngxiǎng téng fēi. fánnǎo shì yìshí de , xìngfú cái shì chángjiǔ de ;shāngxīn shì yī kè de , kuàilè cái shì yīzhí de. jīntiān shì nǐ de shēngrì, Zhù nǐ shēngrì kuàilè !

Sowing a seed can make bright flowers bloom splendidly; planting a young sprout can let greenery spread; pulling down a piece of rosy cloud can make the dream fly upwards swiftly. Troubles will last for only a period of time, while happiness is forever; wounded heart is only for a short moment, while merriment is consistent. Today is your birthday, I wish you a happy birthday.

Also forever and eternal wonderful birthdays like sparkling stars — peaceful, mysterious and beautiful or like building a grand castle — majestic, constructive and everlasting.

To conclude this special happy birthday post, I would like to add an upbeat song called I do believe. I hope you will be inspired and always keep a bright attitude for every moment and have unlimited happy days and years to come. You can do that, I do believe! You are a builder, yes, you can!!!
