Levi Strauss, symbol ( 象 征 [xiàngzhēng] or 标 志 [biāozhì] ) of blue jeans and an icon (图 标 [túbiāo ]) of American culture, is not the creator ( 创 造 者 [chuàngzàozhĕ] ) or inventor (发 明 家 [fāmíngjiā] ) of America’s favorite pair of pants.

Around 1871, in Reno, Nevada, there was a tailor (裁 缝 [cáifeng] ) named Jacob Davis who made his living by making pants. One day, a local miner’s wife (妻 子 [qīzi] ) came to ask him to make some pants that could withstand severe usage. Davis thus came up with the riveted trousers (裤 子 [kùzi] ) to answer the request.

This invention (发 明 [fāmíng] ), the pants with rivet-strengthened stress points and durable (耐 用 的 [nài yòng de ]) “duck cloth,” a type of canvas, was greatly welcomed by local (当 地 的 [dāng dì de] ) miners (矿 工 [kuàng gōng] ). Davis wanted to protect his idea, but he lacked the money to file documents. Davis turned to Levi Strauss, a German immigrant who had a branch of dry-goods store in San Francisco, and the two filed a patent (专 利 权 [zhuān lì quán] ) on a pair of pants strengthened with rivets.

There are so many kinds of jeans out there in the market today, and what is your favorite type of jeans?

A latest Wall Street Journal article points out some scary health risks of skinny jeans and calls them as “skinny jean syndrome,” ( 紧 身 牛 仔 裤 综 合 征 [jǐn shēn niúzǎikù zōnghé zhēng ]) which include lower back pain, digestive issues and blood clots. Also it mentions that friction ( 摩 擦 [mócā] ) caused by overly tight pants may lead to bladder infections, and nerve compression ( 压 缩 [yāsuō] ) causes terrible burning and pain. It also leads to thigh donuts syndrome ( 大 腿 甜 甜 圈 证 [dàtuǐ tián tián quān zhèng ]), which means tight skinny jeans will cause disfigurement (变型 or 毁容 [biàn xíng or huǐróng ])if the wearers are so chubby. They can force fatty tissue into areas above the knees and this causes horizontal lesions to appear around the thighs, and it will end up making the thigh look like thigh donuts that are extremely ugly. So, should you wear skinny jeans? Of course you can, wear them at your own risk:) Just like when you go to the park, it always has a sign: play at your own risk 风 险 [fēngxiăn] !
