Germs (细菌 xi4 jun4 or 病菌 Bing jun4) are all over the world (世界 shi4 jie4); they live in all kinds of places. They are in your nostril (鼻孔 bi2 kong3), on your shoes laces (鞋带 xie2 dai4), and on your eye lashes (眼睫毛yan3 jie2 mao2) too. Those germ troops invade (入侵 ru4 qin1) others’ territory (领土 ling3 tu3), including yours too. You don’t necessarily feel them on you, unless you use microscope (显微镜 xian3 wei2 jing4) as your mirror (镜子 jing4 zi5) all the time. Sometimes we live happily with germs (maybe not happily, but at least peacefully), but, sometimes they just make us sick a lot.

Bacteria (细菌 xi4 jun4) are those tiny, one-celled (单细胞 dan1 xi4 bao1) creatures that take nutrients (营养 ying2 yang3) from where they live to stay germly alive; they can reproduce anywhere at an amazing speed. When germs come to our body, they gave us infections (感染 gan3 ran3 or 发炎 fa1 yan2). The symptom (症状 zheng4 zhuang4) of infections can be sore throats (喉咙疼痛hou2 long2 teng2 tong4), ear infections ( 眼腈发炎 yan3 jing1 fa1 yan2), cavities (蛀牙 zhu4 ya2), and pink eyes (红眼腈 hong2 yan3 jing1). The favorite color of germs must be pink or red:) Imagine the red sore throat, red swollen (红肿 hong2 zhong3) eyes and red nose tip after bad tissue wiping of snot (鼻涕 bi2 ti4)?

Nothing in this world is all bad, so there are some good bacteria too. Some bacteria are necessary (必须的 bi4 xu1 de5) for keeping human body in good balance (平衡 ping2 heng2). For example, those yogurt you ate or the germs in our intestines (肠子 chang2 zi5), they all help us better absorb (吸收 xi1 shou1) the nutrients in the food and make the waste come out easily. We need germs to live happily and lightly. Some bacteria are heroes (英雄 ying1 xiong2), like the germs in the labs (实验室 shi2 yan4 shi4), they are used to produce medicines (药品 yao4 pin3) and vaccines (预防针 yu4 fang2 zhen1).

The avian (niao3 de5, adjective) influenza virus causes bird flu. Birds can be infected by influenza A viruses and all of its subtypes. Yet birds are not capable of carrying either type B or C of the influenza viruses.

The term “swine flu” refers to influenza in pigs, for zhu1 means pigs. Occasionally, pigs transmit influenza viruses to people, mainly hog farm workers and veterinarians.
